With the phased rollout now well underway (prohibitions since February 2025, high-risk obligations activating through 2027), the compliance infrastructure required for high-risk systems—particularly around documentation, monitoring, and auditability—takes time to build correctly. High-risk systems must be designed for effective human oversight, including the ability for humans to interpret outputs and intervene when necessary. This demands transparency into model behavior, clear audit trails, and interfaces that surface actionable information to human operators.

Transparency and Information to Users (Article 13)

Deployers must provide clear information about AI system capabilities and limitations. This requires understanding your systems well enough to document their behavior accurately—something only achievable through systematic observation and measurement.

Practical Steps for Enterprise AI Teams

1. Inventory your AI systems

Map all AI applications against the risk categories. Pay particular attention to systems that influence consequential decisions about individuals or operate in regulated sectors.

2. Implement comprehensive logging

Ensure every AI interaction can be reconstructed. For LLMs, this means capturing prompts, completions, model versions, system configurations, and relevant metadata. Logs must be tamper-resistant (protected against unauthorized modification) and retained for appropriate periods.

3. Establish baseline metrics

Document your systems’ accuracy, fairness, and performance characteristics now. You’ll need these baselines to demonstrate ongoing compliance and detect degradation over time.

4. Build audit capabilities
